Dugg Simpson - Community Building



.. some of the work I have been involved with over the years to build better connections, communication and creative possibilities...


Canadian National Folk Music Programming Group co-founder/co-chair  1997-2007
 - an annual meeting to enhance communication and cooperation begun by festival directors from Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto. Co-chaired its evolution from 4 to 12 festivals and presenters.


Western Roots Artistic Directors (aka WRAD)
co-founder/chair/member   1999 to present
 - an annual meeting and list serve to enhance professional development, communication and cooperation among more than 20 artistic directors from festivals across western and northern Canada.


Future Roots
- a 5 day conversation among audience members, performers, festival staff, funding officers and volunteers about where festivals could go in the next ten years.

- 2 days of discussion among staff and board members with people from the audience, partners and other members of the extended local community.


WRASTA
creator/development/chair
1998 - present    an annual opportunity for 8+ festival staff including artistic directors, general managers, volunteer coordinators and selected keeners to meet anbd discuss best practices.


Young Scottish Traditions Award

founding partner
- contributed the commitment to present the first winner of the award at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival.


Showcase Scotland: International Steering Committee

- one of the Canadian representatives on the advisory council.


13th annual North American Folk Music & Dance Alliance Conference
- community programmer for an event that grew to 5 days, including largest public outreach program in conference history, including 27 venues where the public could hear the visiting performers, created a legacy surplus of more than $25,000.


Ontario Council of Folk Festivals:
Artistic Directors conference
- invited to create and conduct a two-day retreat for Ontario festival artistic directors on professional development and the possibilities for collaboration.
